We decided to have an annual award for Club Person of the Year, recognising someone who contributes to the club through on or off court achievements and endeavours.
We were honoured to have Shirley’s son Colin and daughter Tracey attend the BTC AGM on the 10 August to make the presentation for 2017.
For the inaugural Club Person of the Year award, the committee decided upon the recipient, Gavin Jones!
Gavin’s association with Bundoora Tennis Club began when he was just a junior player and as such, he has had a long association with Shirley. Rumour has it that he was quite scared of her – and not just when he was a junior.
Gavin returned to the club when his daughters Bonnie and Jamie began their junior tennis and over the years, his involvement here just grew and grew. Gavin has put in countless hours working on the courts – some paid, but many voluntary hours on top of that. His friendliness and love of a chat about tennis has been an asset to Bundoora Tennis Club – you meet Gav and your first impressions are that this is such a friendly place to be. His coaching clients think he’s terrific too.
Even though Bonnie and Jamie have finished their junior days, and he’s no longer required to be a Team Manager, Gavin is still there on a Saturday morning supporting the kids he coaches, having a chat with parents and taking an interest in everything to do with tennis and the people at our club.
This mid year has marked the end of Gavin’s work at the club, maintaining our courts and battling the winds of Bundoora to keep the grounds in a tidy state. As such, we feel that this is a fitting time to name him as our Club Person of the year for 2017.
Congratulations, and Gavin and thank you for all the work you have done for the club.
